Discovering Avignon and its activities
Avignon, « The City of the Popes » is situated close to Orange (north), Nîmes (south-west), Arles (south) and Aix-en-Provence (south-east).
Visit, or discover cruising on the river Rhône, the famous Pope Palace (Napoleon Bonaparte stayed there after the Egyptian war), the Bridge with the remaining 4 arches, the Remparts, the Pont du Gard, the Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, the Luberon, the Wine districts of Tavel and Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
The Pope Palace, built in the middle of the 14th century, is the biggest of the gothic constructions of the Middle Age.
The Bridge of Avignon, built during the 12th century and named the bridge Saint-Bénezet, connected Avignon to Villeneuve. The Remparts surround the old town on close to 3 miles.
The Pont du Gard is the highest bridge-acqueduct known in the roman world. Built on 3 stairs with stones found on the site, the bridge dominates the river Gardon close to 170feet height and 1000feet length.
The Fontaine-de-Vaucluse is the largest natural water spring in France and rises in the heart of a volcano.
The Luberon with its typical villages and the lavender fields.
The marvellous Wine districts of Tavel (rosé) and Châteauneuf-du-Pape (red and white) famous all over the world.
